Canal walk or boat tour

The Venice of the north has been well preserved and her famous canals are as charming now as they were in Rembrandt's day. This is the part of Amsterdam where the rich merchants and regents of the golden age built their beautiful homes. It is still a romantic paradise full of beautiful gardens, museums, churches, trendy bars and restaurants on the waterside. The Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht canals were built and dug around the medieval town. On the Amsterdam map of 1680 the city is shaped like an onion, which reminds me: this tour - especially when done by boat - can be so romantic that it is wise to bring your handkerchief.
